Always make sure you're aware of the location of your water shut off valves. In a plumbing emergency knowing the location of these may help save you £££ in damage that may be caused from a leak.
Mains cold water: This shut off is usually located under your kitchen sink or nearby it.
Hot water from a combi boiler: Your Mains valve will shut this off or at the boiler, but this shut off is usually best left to plumbers and heating engineers.
The mains water valve in most houses will look like the one below.
Cold water water from a storage tank: This will shut off in your attic or possibly an airing cupboard where your hot water cylinder is located.
Hot water fed from a storage tank: Same as cold water storage above.
The gate valve from the cold water storage tank will generally look like these ones pictured below.
